Digital Imaging & 35mm Slide Scanning FAQ Q. I have an HD, big screen TV. How will your scans display on this type of TV? A. Your final image size will be 1735 x 2593 pixels. The highest resolution HDTV available today is 1080 x 1920 pixels. Naturally, the quality of your final image is going to be greatly dependent on the quality of your original slide. Sometimes people think that their slides are in better shape or sharper than they really are. For our own reputation, we are going to get the images as sharp as possible. The display on your widescreen TV will depend on how you have your TV setup. 35mm Slide Scanning FAQ Our slide show is set up to display in the 4:3 mode. You should be able to set your TV up to display in 4:3 or 16:9. Q. Why would people that care enough about their slide and photo collection to digitize it, send their whole collection to the other side of the world, to India, to save a few dollars? A. It is probably because they are sucked in by the unbelievably low prices and they never read the fine print in the "terms and conditions" when they have to sign up for an "account." We have been theatened with a lawsuit in a letter from a lawyer representing one of these companies, if we keep telling people their identity. They do NOT want anyone to know what they are doing because they know that most people would not knowingly agree to sending their photo collection 9,000 miles away to a third world country no matter how much money they save. We'd like to tell you their name but, at our low profit margin, we just can't afford to do it. The rule might be: if the price is unbelievably low, your heirloom photos are going to India.
Thumbnail Catalogs Thumbnail Catalogs printouts are available for all of the images on your slide show disk. If you ever want to track down an image on your disk so you can get it printed out or you want to send it to someone, this catalog is a handy resource. Thumbnail Catalog are $1 per sheet of 30 Photos. Note that your file name will be truncated if it is over 29 characters and spaces long. This can be fixed by printing less photos per page but the charge will still be $1 per page. It is up to you to decide if you want a printout that is different than the normal 30 photos.
What if your pictures are in photo albums and you don't want to take them out of the albums but you still want to digitize them? We can help. If the pages of your album will come out and the photos are not covered with any kind of plastic sheeting, we can scan the photos without removing them from the pages. We will have to charge $15 extra per photo album page but this includes scanning the full page and then separating the individual photos and preparing the images in Photoshop®. There is a lot of extra work here and we may have to adjust the $15 per page price if it is taking us too much time but, for right now and until further notice, we will stick with that price. Photo Album Pages Once your job is in the shop, we will stick with whatever we quote you for pricing. If the photos are in plastic, you will have to take them out. We can't scan through the plastic and it wouldn't work to just pull the plastic back for scanning. Each picture on the Photo Album page will also be subject to our usual scanning prices. Just count all the pictures in your photo album and figure out your costs and then add $15 per album page. Our advice to you is to take the pictures out of the pages and save any extra charges from us. If you number the pictures on the back to keep track of where they go in the album, do the marking in pencil and not ink. We had numerous customers who have ruined a good part of their photo collection by marking with a permanent magic marker on the backs of the photos. On many of the photos, the ink offset onto the picture below. Please avoid this heartbreaking situation. Use pencil.

Internegatives: You used to be able to get prints made from your slides by taking them to the "drug store" and they would ship them off to a film processor laboratory. The processor would make an "Internegative" from the original slide and then make the prints from the internegative. Prints From Scans The Internegative is a negative made on special color film designed for making print copies from color slides. Kodak, unfortunately, stopped making its internegative films, and processing labs are dropping the service due to lack of demand. Internegative printing is on the way out, unless you can find a laboratory. that still has the film. Prints From Digital Images: We make scans of your slides first and then we make prints form the digital images. We had some prints made from one of our scans, just for the sake of comparison. This was a slide of average quality and sharpness. We feel that an enlargement of one of our scans, such as this, would yield a print that would be satisfactory to all but those that are very hyper critical. The quality of the original is going to determine what your final print will look like. Here is the original image, reduced down in size so that you can load it in your web browser without having to wait an unbearable amount of time. You can click on the image to view a larger image but still not the full resolution size of the scan.

Most stores that develop film will also print digital files. When it is blown up, you will see exactly what is on the film but it may not be the quality that you are looking for. That being said, these may be very precious photos for you, low quality or not, and they may be well worth saving. You can see an example of one particular clip, above and to the right. This is a clip from and 8mm film. You can see the results of our final image below. The movie film clip was scanned at high resolution and then saved as a 7" x 6" image at 300 pixels per inch. Keep the originals and distribute the digitized copies. Gather together photographs and 35mm slides from many relatives then distribute the album back to them as a DVD playable slideshow. Why Digitize? No need to divide up the family photographs. Everyone gets a full set of photos in a beautiful slideshow as large as your TV set. Disaster preparedness. Scanning and saving the digitized images to CD or DVD can provide a compact storage solution. Make more than one CD and distribute to relatives. The more copies that exist the more likely your pictures will survive any disaster. jDigitized images that are stored on CD can be stored in a safe location like a bank safe deposit box. Preserve image quality before the original deteriorates. The longer your 35mm slides and photos sit around, the more likely they are to suffer serious degradation from fading, scratches, loss, or damage. If you have a 35mm slide or photo that is rapidly fading, get it digitized now before you lose too much quality. Get a digitized scan with highest resolution and color depth possible and store the picture on archival quality digital media. Plan for migrating the images every few years to a new format or media. Reduce handling of original photos and 35mm slides to prevent wear and tear. This is a significant factor for museums and photographic archives, but should not be overlooked in family photograph collections. Repeated handling of photographs can easily rub-off penciled captions, for example. 35mm slides are even more susceptible to damage from fingerprints and molds from oils on your fingers.
